REVIVAL: Owners of Cape Town's TLC pop-up store within Space for Life, Lauren Terras and Tamlyn Burger Picture: SHELLEY CHRISTIANS

...With Tammy Foote and Lauren Terras of TLC in the Mother City

What kind of shop is it?
TLC is a decor boutique that focuses on reviving furniture styles (primarily mid-century and 'old Karoo farm style') while emphasising distinctly South African design.
Describe your shop in a sentence
It aims to provide the public with something unique, something that hasn't recently been whisked off a mass-production line and something that may have its roots (or at least a previous life) in South Africa.
How long has the shop been open?
TLC is essentially still very much in its infant stage.
What items do you stock?
A variety of furniture and other interior gems in mid-century and Karoo farm styles. Some in mint condition, others we have revamped or contemporised. Also sculptures by artist Sarah Lovejoy, in ceramic and bronze.
Describe your customers
The TLC customer cherishes quirk and character, has a creative flair and is searching for something special that echoes South Africa in one way or another.
What is your soundtrack in the shop?
Mid-century, soul-filled South African classics like Hugh Masekela. And any old-school music that, like our pieces, carries elements of nostalgia and tells a story.
What makes a piece of design good?
Lauren: It must be timeless, long-lasting and able to live through the various trends.
Tammy: A well-designed piece should stand out without being imposing. It should define or enhance the nature of its environment and ultimately serve a purpose.
What are your plans for the shop?
We are designing our own unique, South African interior range. We have also been working on some quirky ways to upcycle more traditional South African pieces.
Where is the shop?
